In the time before the FIFA World Cup, Alcantara made his legend known with Catalunya in 1915 where he played for six games in 1924 with four goals. He represented the Philippines in the 1917 Far Eastern Games in Tokyo where they bamboozled Japan to a 15-2 scoreline. That was the greatest performance of the Philippine football team, which remains unmatched to this day. Three years later, he was chosen to play for the Spanish national team in the 1920 Summer Olympics but he was unable to play because he was to take his final medical exams. On his 25th birthday, Alcantara scored two goals in his Spanish national team debut with a win over Belgium. He eventually made five appearances for the national team and scored six goals. He retired in 1927 to become a doctor.
To this day, we may be still arguing on who is the greatest player ever – Pele or Maradona. But if we are to discuss about the greatest Filipino player of all time then there is no doubt that Paulino Alcantara is the one!
